“The Tire Park” ~ The Hidden playground in Catonsville.
Where is the Catonsville Tire Park? Catonsville isn’t a big town but there are lots of special places tucked in here. The Tire Park that is part of the extensive Patapsco State Park is one of these places. This kids play area can accommodate a wide range of ages – say from about 2 years old to big kids with no problem. It’s a huge playground carved out in the middle of the woods and features hundreds of tires to play on. The tires are huge – the kind you’d see on a big excavator. Some are buried halfway into the ground in a long row for running over, others are tied together with cable to climb on and jump through with tire swings thrown in for good measure.
The Tire Park is really hidden well – it’s about 1 1/2 miles off of Frederick Road – take Hilton all the way to the end and the entrance is on the right. The kind of place you can live a few miles from and not know about until someone clues you in!
It’s just a fun, active, charming play area nestled in an area of the park that includes hiking trails and areas for scouts or group camping! Kids LOVE the Tire Park. There are bathrooms too which is a big plus since there are always toddler age kids running around. Several shelters and picnic tables are very popular places for parties both large and small.
To add to the fun at the Tire Park, there is a free standing nature center that includes some real Maryland wildlife and info about birds, snakes and other animals indigenous to the area. Round it out with a newly plotted kids 1/2 mile hike and you have the afternoon covered.
